The report paints a clear picture:

  • Only 16% of the industry has started using AI

  • Yet 59% of those already report efficiency gains

BDO points to AI as a key tool to handle challenges such as low margins, stricter documentation requirements, and declining productivity – and showcases both major contractors and specialised technology providers moving early in this space.

Volve is mentioned as one of the companies building dedicated AI solutions for construction, underscoring a growing recognition that generic tools are not enough for complex project environments. Domain-specific AI teammates will play a central role in how projects are tendered, contracted, and managed in the years ahead.

BDO’s recommended steps to get started with AI

BDO also shares seven practical recommendations for construction companies that want to move from talk to action:

  1. Build competence and understanding
Start small. Run manageable AI initiatives, follow the development, arrange internal training, and appoint “AI ambassadors” to keep it on the agenda.

  2. Assess where AI can help
Analyse your own processes to identify where AI can genuinely improve efficiency and quality. AI won’t fix everything, but it can create real value in the right places.

  3. Use existing solutions first
You don’t need your own AI department to get started. Use mature tools from established providers – including industry-specific solutions like Volve – to reduce cost and risk.

  4. Invest in data quality
AI is only as good as the data it works on. Make sure data is collected, cleaned, and structured so it can actually be used.

  5. Understand ethics and regulation
Ensure you have a basic grip on the legal and ethical side of AI – including privacy, security, and responsible use.

  6. Implement gradually
Start with pilot projects, evaluate results, and adjust before rolling out at scale.

  7. Stay updated
AI moves fast. Keep an eye on new developments, and continuously revisit your approach.

At Volve, we’re proud to be part of this emerging ecosystem – helping teams connect project documents to decisions in tendering and contract processes, so they can control information and, ultimately, control outcomes.
